From the February 5th 1952 edition of the Ottawa Journal:

Radio in Review -- Switzerland with Arabs head

I have not yet steeled myself to the point of listening to Erroll Flynn's new radio show, "The Adventures of Casanova," and it's just possible I never will.  I don't recall the exact terms of my contract but it seems to me somewhere in the fine print there was a clause saying I didn't have ti listen to Errol Flynn playing Casanova.  Or look at him, either, if that should come to passion television, and it probably will.
However, just out of curiosity, I assigned Operative 22, a new man around here who gets all the dirty jobs, to Mr. Flynn.  Just before leaving for more congenial employment, Operative 22 issued his last report.  Mr. Flynn, he said, isn't really Casanova; he's an updated version named Christopher Casanova.  Behaves just like the other guy, though.  Always in trouble with dames.  "Technique (with microphone) lousy.  Technique (with dames) just fair.  Done as well myself," reported Operative 22 scornfully and forthwith quit the radio reviewing dodge forever.
So much for "The Adventures of Casanova."  Mr. Flynn, the distinguished swordsman, is feeding at the same banquet table with a lot of other Hollywood names of great candle-power.  In short, a trend.  As I reconstruct it, this new and highly profitable game goes roughly like this.  A radio entrepreneur, which is to say a man who knows a fast buck when he sees one, surrounds a movie star--it's not easy for one man to surround another, but radio entrepreneurs do it every day--and speaks as follows:
"You'll have to show up maybe once a month, maybe not even that much.  We'll have the recording junk all ready and all you gotta do is read these here scripts into the microphone.  You can knock off four or five in a day without sweating blood and there's maybe $3,000 a week in it for you, depending on how well the syndication goes.
There are half a dozen of these syndicated adventure series being peddled around the radio stations now, each one offering a glamorous name.  Orson Welles is doing two--"The Black Museum" and "The Lives of Harry Limes," both transcribed in England.  Marlene Dietrich, the unquenchable grandmother, just started one of the more ambitious one, "Care Istanbul," which follows Walter Winchell on ABC Sunday night.  The Humphrey Bogarts have been in the game since last spring.
One thing these adventurers all have in common.  They're all a long ways away--in Istanbul, like Miss Dietrich, or in Tangier, which, Mr. Welles remarked, was "Switzerland with Arabs" or in the South Seas like the Bogarts.  Never are they in Brooklyn.  Also, they're all in a twilight zone of respectability, not against the law, exactly, but not exactly with it, either.
"Cops all over the globe looking for me," says Harry Limes, running his words together just like Orson Welles.  What they're looking for him for isn't quite clear.  He's an international operator, he admits, but somehow the other crooks are crookeder (also they suffer from the disadvantage of not being Orson Welles.  The other crooks actually do the killing, steal hte penicillin; Mr. Welles winds up profiting from the murders, the thefts, he didn't commit; the other crooks land in the morgue or in jail.  The original Harry Limes from "The Third Man" was quite a crumby character; the radio Harry, on the other hand, has qualms about selling morphine to school-children though he doesn't mind profiting from it with other crooks.  A delicate ethical point.
Meanwhile, in Istanbul, Miss Dietrich, masquerading as Madamoiselle Madoux, a hep cafe proprietor, is softly singing "la Vie en Rose" outwitting international spies, and shattering hearts like wineglasses.  The famed husky voice is spitting out some of the most wonderful chestnuts I've heard in years, in case you collect these things.
     "You're talking like a fool"--"I'm talking like a woman."
     "Mam'selle, life . . . is a gamble."
As she tells one of her impressive roster of lovers, she is "a woman you would like to forget."
     "Yes, I'd like to--but I cannot."
Don't know what the Bogarts are up to these days.  Last time I inquired they were searching for buried treasure.  They ought to have found enough by now to retire.
